A WOMAN who tried to tackle a kitchen fire herself was given oxygen by firefighters after being overcome by smoke.
The fire broke out at the house in Kent Street, Leigh, after the woman had fallen asleep after leaving pans on the cooker.
She was alerted by a smoke alarm and tried to put out the blaze but was overcome. Kitchen units and the cooker were damaged. The woman was taken to hospital for a check up.
A fire brigade spokesman said: "Without the smoke alarm the incident could have been a lot more serious."
