A REBEL Labour county councillor was among mourners at the funeral of a woman who became the face of a campaign against care home closures.
Coun George Slynn joined family and friends of Phoebe Hickey who died last Thursday. Mrs Hickey, 86, and her husband, Norman, touched the hearts of protesters against Lancashire County Council's decision to axe two-thirds of its care homes.
The announcement was made just days after Mrs Hickey moved into Northlands Nursing Home, Great Harwood, one of the homes earmarked for closure.
Yesterday Norman said his last goodbye to his wife of 55 years, at a funeral service at St Bartholomew's Church, Park Lane, Great Harwood, followed by cremation at Accrington.
Coun Slynn, who missed the crucial vote through illness, criticised his own council for the decision and offered his support to the campaigners.
