THE 'shocked and stunned' family of a man killed in a jet ski accident at Blackpool's North Pier say their father was taking the correct safety precautions.
Ian Hales, 47 died when his Yamaha jet ski hit the pier's supports on Good Friday. His wife, Debbie, 46, was yesterday said to be in intensive care at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, having suffered serious injuries in the accident.
Sons Michael, 28, and Jason, 26, released a statement on Tuesday, on behalf of their two brothers, Martin 22 and Matthew, 17, as well as sister Joanne, 18, and Mr Hales' mother.
"We are all shocked and stunned by the accident," they said: "Our father always has been and always will be a great inspiration to all of us and we miss him deeply."
Police are still investigating how it happened, and the family added: "They had all been out riding the jet ski at various points during the day and Ian and Debbie had taken the jet ski out on the last trip of the afternoon, and as always, had taken appropriate safety precautions.
"We'd like to thank all our family and friends who are supporting us at this difficult time.
"We have all been greatly comforted by the many messages of support that we have received from friends and colleagues all over."
The family, who live in the Bolton area, have also passed on their thanks to police, the lifeboat service and the coastguard for their help in rescuing Mrs Hales.
The jet ski is registered with the Lake District National Park Authority at Windermere.
A police investigation is continuing into the circumstances of the incident. It was witnessed by hundreds of visitors enjoying the holiday sunshine on the beach.
