LEIGH faced a strong Newton-le-Willows side who put on 218 from 40 overs. Steven Young, Andrew Potter and Stuart McLean were all wicketless from their various spells and after 20 overs the Newton openers had put on 111 without loss.
Alex Roussak finally broke the opening partnership and with Pete Dugdale took four wickets in a spirited fight back. Jess Brett, suffered a little as the Newton batsmen took full advantage of their position, but she still bowled a disciplined line and length.
In reply Leigh got off to the kind of start they didn't want. Steven Young and Phil Edwards were both out cheaply leaving the score on 5 for 2. Will Banner and Steve Waywell and Neil Jennings battled hard in the middle order and Waywells score of 47 was outstanding in the circumstances.
An unfortunate retirement by Alex Roussak and two more quick wickets left the Leigh side struggling to hang on for a draw. Good resistance from Stuart McLean and Andrew Potter showed the teams resolve as they batted well for a ninth wicket partnership of 22. Jess Brett's was the last wicket to fall leaving the target well short at 110 all out.
