LEIGH Cricket Club's Junior Section begin their season this weekend when the first Saturday morning junior workshop starts at 10am.
These popular sessions continue throughout the summer and all local children, from six to sixteen, boys and girls, are invited to come along and spend an hour and a half at Beech Walk each Saturday morning learning about, playing and, most importantly, enjoying the great game.
Each session is delivered under the expert eye of the club's England Cricket Board Coaches, led by head coach and former 1st XI captain, Tim McKiernan, and is designed to accommodate complete novices and more proficient juniors alike.
Known as the Tigers, Leigh's junior section run four teams through out the season and compete in the Wigan and District Junior League at under 11, 13, 15 and 17 age levels. Each team has a dedicated manager and qualified coach or senior player attached to ensure the organisation runs smoothly and all are given the chance to enjoy playing the game. The younger teams also play in a uniquely designed coloured kit which has proved popular with players and parents alike.
If you are interested in giving cricket a go, you will be made welcome at Leigh CC, Beech Walk, this Saturday, and for a nominal £1 a session you will have the chance to learn more about the game and perhaps make that first step in becoming a Freddie Flintoff or James Anderson of the future.
For more information contact the club on 01942 671818, log onto the Leigh CC website at www.leighcc.org or speak with Tim McKiernan on 07932 641832.
Leigh U11's have recently won the Wigan & District indoor U11 competition, beating Standish from the Bolton Association by 133 to 106. Lead by Matthew Schleiner, the team included one nine and two eight year olds and won after a particularly good performance in the field with Robbie Millward, Joe Singleton and Mattie McKiernan doing well. Chris Aspinall lead the way with the bat and with Deacon Monks defending doggedly to ensure the opposition were never in with a chance, Leigh strolled to a comfortable victory.
Well done to the lads and a special mention to eight-year old Oliver Potter, who played in many of the league games, only to unfortunately miss out on the final.
