DARWEN traders have welcomed proposals to look into limited parking on pedestrianised Bridge Street.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council last month announced plans to provide disabled bays on the street.

Shopkeepers drew up a 100-strong petition to introduce limited parking on the road to encourage trade, which, they say, has decreased since the street was pedestrianised almost 18 years ago.

The council announced on Thursday night that it would investigate the request.

Eileen Helliwell of Helliwell's Shoe Repair on Bridge Street, said: "I'm glad something's being done. It's good news that the council is doing something about it.

"Trade along here has been affected since cars were banned and we all want something where cars will be able to park on one side of the road for a short period of time."

Ken Knowles, of The Sweet Shop, said: "It's about time that something was done to bring shoppers back to this area of Darwen."
