THE family of a Rossendale soldier who celebrated his 21st birthday in Basra are delighted that he is set to return home in July.
Corporal Craig Payne, of East Bank, Water, left home for the Gulf two months ago to serve with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. His family are now planning a party for his return and are storing his presents until he reaches home.
Grandma Dorothy Love said: "We received a phone call from him last week, which was lovely.
"He told us not to worry and that everything was all right out there. At the moment, he is digging trenches and is very happy doing what he is doing.
"I have bought him an England football top, but I haven't sent it in the post because I didn't think it would be appropriate.
"He has got lots of presents waiting for him and lots of money, so he can spend it on whatever he wants when he gets back."
Craig joined the Army when he was 17 after leaving Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, in Waterfoot. He has previously served in Kosovo.
Dorothy added: "It was Craig's dream to serve in the Army. He feels very passionate about this country and loves his job. We are extremely proud of him and are just praying for the day he comes home."
His dad, David and two sisters, Janine, 19 and Chloe, seven, can't wait for the day Craig returns home to help him celebrate his birthday.
