There are about 150 species of lichen in Britain. A lichen is an example of what is known as symbiosis -- which means that two organisms are living together for their mutual benefit.
Lichens are very sensitive to pollution and during the industrial revolution many species almost became extinct. These days lichen are becoming more common, proof atmospheric pollution has improved.
There are lots of expensive, technical books around, but what Jack Laundon has done is to produce a guide which we can all understand and is no more expensive than a pint of beer!
