POLICE investigating an incident in which a 78-year-old woman was hit on the head by a flying ashtray thrown from the beer garden of a town centre pub, today revealed the pensioner had undergone emergency surgery for her injuries.
Eileen O'Meara, from Burnley, was transferred to Royal Preston Hospital after her condition deteriorated on Sunday.
She was initially admitted to Burnley General Hospital after she was hit by the ashtray as she walked along Parker Lane, Burnley, on Saturday at 4.10pm.
Officers who were already patrolling the area as part of an operation during Burnley's home game with Sheffield Wednesday, were called to the scene.
The pensioner suffered a fractured skull.
A police spokesman said: "The condition of Eileen O'Meara deteriorated on Sunday evening and as a result she was transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital, where she underwent an immediate operation in relation to to her injuries.
"Mrs O'Meara remained in a poorly state until today, where her condition is described as poorly but stable."
Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Buschini said: "We are very concerned for Mrs O'Meara and are monitoring the situation and maintaining close contact with her family."
He went on: "We have spoken to a number of people who were present at the time, but are keen to speak to people who were present but have not yet come forward."
