BUDDING female cricketers are a step closer to forming their own team at Darwen Cricket Club.
A taster session for girls interested in playing will be held at Shadsworth Leisure Centre in May. The date has yet to be confirmed.
Rachel Walmsley, England Cricket Board coach, is organising the event.
She said: "I know a lot of girls who want to play but there's no team that's near enough.
"At the moment it's not very good because if they want to play, they usually end up in a team full of boys.
"It's only right they should be given the opportunity to play."
The club is currently involved in an 'out of school' recruitment programme with 36 schools, to attract children to the sport.
Ian Cordingley, club junior co-ordinator, said: "Hopefully we will be able to bring more girls to the sport when we are working with kids from schools."
