IT WASN'T just Blackpool's FA Cup win that made 1953 a special sporting year.
A new book published last week reveals a host of memorable moments from Coronation year, in a wide range of sports.
Author, Jonathan Rice, features a report on the memorable FA Cup Final, as well as reminiscences on the world of golf, athletics, motor sport and tennis, amongst others, in '1953, The Crowning Year of Sport.'
That year's Derby saw legendary jockey, Gordon Richards, win the most famous flat race at the 28th attempt -- his only victory in the Epsom Classic.
England's cricketers played out a thrilling series with the Australians and, after four nerve-wracking draws, took the Ashes for the first time in 20 years with a fifth test victory at the Oval.
And, for the first time ever, Everest was conquered, with Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay reaching the summit on May 31. In the wider world of football, it wasn't all good news for the Seasiders. An England side containing four men more used to wearing the famous Tangerine was beaten 6-3 by the mighty Hungary, their first ever defeat on home soil by a team from outside the British Isles.
Harry Johnston, Stanley Matthews, Ernie Taylor and Stan Mortensen were never selected together for England duty again.
