YOUNGSTERS had to be kept away from playgroup on Tuesday after raiders attacked Shakerley Community Centre stealing equipment and toddler group cash.
Determined thieves cut through security shutters and battered their way into the rear of the Cumberland Road building then stole cash and a combination television and video player bought for the youngsters just three weeks ago.
Burglars set-off an alarm during the 1.40am raid but searched through the building before leaving with a silver coloured 14" Bush combi TV and video and a small locked metal cupboard containing a cheque book and petty cash.
The locker and a cheque book were later found dumped in an empty property in nearby Devon Road but £70 in notes and a further £10 in change were missing.
The centre is the focal point of the Tyldesley estate and provides facilities for a toddler group, a 32-strong playgroup, a children's holiday club and a meeting place for senior citizens. On Tuesday parents were advised to keep children at home while volunteers repaired the damage.
Play worker Christine Williams said: "We have problems with vandalism but this is really disheartening. Volunteers put in a lot of time to help the community. We're grateful to those who have helped clear the mess and people's support. Now we intend to upgrade security and Police have promised to keep an eye on the premises."
Offers of help to replace the stolen equipment should be made on 01942 879521.
