FOR some time now it has been the tradition that members of staff from Westleigh High School take on Westleigh Warriors Basketball Team at some point during the school year.
This year was no exception and, as there are now two members of Leigh Centurions working as Learning Support Assistants at the school, they were asked to invite some more of their players to beef up the teachers' side.
This they duly did and despite a decided lack of knowledge of the rules of the sport they played a valiant game. "Non-contact sport" did not seem to be in their vocabulary and at one point Sean Richardson actually picked up one of the Warriors, Chris Lowe, and carried him and the ball down court! They also tried playing with six men on court for some time.
The game was a great success and a real boost to the Year 11 pupils who played.
"We charged 20p on the door and raised £43 towards Westleigh Basketball Club's funds. I think some of the teachers who watched gave much more generously than the 20p and the club is very grateful to the school and the Centurion players" said Sharon Seaton, Learning Mentor at the School and Coach / team organiser of Westleigh Basketball Club.
The Basketball Club meets every Thursday at the school, 14's and under 6-8pm and over 14's 8-10pm. Everyone is welcome and they are always looking for more girls to play. For more information contact Sharon or Andy Seaton on 01942 896845.
