GRAEME Souness is set to hold showdown talks with Henning Berg later this week to determine whether or not the defender still has a future at the club.

As things stand, Berg is due to retire from the English game at the end of the season when his current contract expires.

But Souness could yet make a dramatic U-turn by offering the 33-year-old another year at Ewood.

Berg has indicated he is ready to play on after planning permission problems have held up his move back to Norway.

However, Souness has already begun his search for a replacement with Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso the man he had earmarked as his top summer target.

But any move for the Italian now looks dead in the water after the Gers have priced him out of a switch to Ewood.

So Souness could be ready to change his mind on Berg, although the former Manchester United star is not holding out too much hope ahead of the meeting.

"I haven't heard anything concrete from the club so I'm still presuming nothing is going to happen," said Berg.

"I'm still interested in staying, which I've said all along since my situation with the kids changed.

"I can't have the kids until at least Christmas anyway because the house isn't going to be finished which is why I said I could play on for another year.

"But I haven't heard anything from the club since so I presume that's the end of it."

If Souness decides against offering Berg a new deal, then the popular Norwegian could well have played his last game for the club.

A hamstring injury kept him out of Saturday's final home game against West Brom and the player admitted he was gutted he couldn't say a proper goodbye to the fans.

"It was difficult on Saturday," said Berg.

"I've been here since 1993, apart from three years at United, so Blackburn is where I've played my football and I've had some great times.

"My first spell here was fantastic and so was the second, especially when we got promoted and then won the Worthington Cup.

"I was desperate to get fit for Saturday because I wanted to go out wearing a shirt, not sat in the stand with an injury.

"But overall I'm happy with the way I have played this season if it turns out to be my last.

"It's not a case of me bowing out because I can't perform anymore, there are other reasons why I won't be playing next season.

"So I'm delighted that I have been able to play as well as I have this season and I'm delighted with the way the fans have responded to me."

Meanwhile, Dwight Yorke was dropped from the starting line up on Saturday after turning up late for the game.

Yorke arrived 15 minutes late for a pre-match team meeting so Souness gave his place to Hakan Sukur instead.

Rovers reserves are in action against Bolton at Ewood Park tonight in what is their final league game of the season (kick-off 7pm).
