A SUCCESSFUL family support scheme pioneered by the Church of England in Blackburn with Darwen will soon also benefit the Pendle area.
The care support scheme will be made available to disadvantaged people in the borough and the church is offering free training to equip volunteers to work with families under stress.
Chris Simpson, local family support co-ordinator, said: "The scheme is proving successful in Blackburn with Darwen so we are hoping to duplicate it in the Pendle area."
Volunteers would bring practical help for around two hours a week, working with children aged between five and 13 years.
Chris, who is a qualified social worker with wide experience of working with young people, said: "If they've had families of their own they know the sort of practical help that's needed in everyday situations.
"I think this is something that's been desperately needed and it's also an opportunity for people who feel they want to put something back, people whose families have grown up and who have experience to contribute.
"Contacts with families in the area are being developed through family, heath and social workers, family centres and local churches."
The Blackburn Diocese, which includes Pendle, provides free training and continuing support for its volunteers, welcoming inquiries from people in their 20s and upwards.
Peter Nowland, diocesan Family Life projects manager, said: "The Diocese's approach to family support is believed to be breaking new ground in the Church of England.
"Some families, especially those headed by lone parents, can be isolated in their community and have little chance of making friends.
"Worries about children, their own health and issues at school can all become larger than life.
"A friendly visitor who can share a cup of tea and chat about these concerns and just offer some everyday help can make all the difference."
