CHARITY workers are facing a race against time to raise £150,000 to start a soup kitchen for homeless people.
Pat Monks, manager of Broken Arcs Christian Charity shop on Duckworth Street, Darwen, has been looking to set up a homeless safe-haven for eight years and the right property has finally come on the market.
Pat wants to buy the Baptist Church on Islington, Blackburn, but funds are short.
She said: "We are looking for someone who can help us to raise the money and we want someone who's experienced with large sums.
"It's a race against time now because we've heard from the estate agent that another offer has been put in.
"We really need someone to help us to try and raise this amount."
The Duckworth Street shop sees 150 customers each week and has 10 volunteers. If the bid for the church is successful, Pat plans to turn it into a drop-in centre for homeless people.
