HENNING Berg's Blackburn career is over following a heart-to-heart with Rovers boss Graeme Souness.
Berg met Souness yesterday to discuss the possibility of him postponing his retirement plans for another 12 months.
However, the popular Norwegian was told in the meeting that he will not be offered a new one-year contract after Souness has decided against a last-minute U-turn.
"That's definitely it for me now," said Berg, who has clocked up nearly 250 league appearances for Rovers during two separate spells with the club.
"I had a chat with the manager and he said he won't be giving me a contract for next season, so that's fair enough.
"At the end of the day, he is the manager and he has to decide who's going to stay here next season.
"If he decides I'm not going to be here then fine, that's his decision. I'll just have to accept it.
"Obviously, if it had been down to me then I would have liked to stay here but it wasn't my decision."
Berg's future at the club has been shrouded in mystery for some time.
Initially, the former Manchester United star had announced his intention to retire from English football in the summer in order to spend more time with his family.
However, planning permission problems meant that his plans to return to Norway had to be put on hold so he informed the club that he would be free to play on for another season.
In the meantime, though, Souness had already been working on bringing in a replacement and he tried to line up Rangers star Lorenzo Amoruso.
But when that move subsequently collapsed, Souness then hinted he might be ready to make a U-turn on Berg and offer him another season.
However, after careful deliberation, the Rovers boss decided to stick to his original decision, thus calling time on Berg's Ewood career.
"I just wish he had told me six weeks ago when I first told him that I was looking to stay for another year," said Berg.
"He should have told me there and then that he wasn't going to give me a contract because his reasons for not giving me one haven't changed since then.
"He said if I'd gone to him at Christmas then he would have given me a new one because he was happy with my form but my circumstances were different then.
"So it's a bit sad how it's happened because they could have told me before the West Brom then at least I could have said a proper goodbye to the fans.
"I didn't know if that was my last game at Ewood or not on Saturday and neither did the fans so I didn't get the opportunity to say an official goodbye."
Now Berg knows he is going to be released, he is ready to consider offers from other clubs.
And although he's now in the veteran bracket, he insists he can still do a job for someone in the Premiership.
"If someone needs a centre half and would like me in their team then I would have a look at it, definitely," said Berg, who is still hoping to be fit for Sunday's game against Spurs.
"My situation is that I won't have my kids back in Norway until Christmas anyway so I might as well play on for another season rather than sit here twiddling my thumbs doing nothing.
"So I want to play a bit more while I can. Once you've finished, there's no chance you can come back. You can't finish football and then say two years later 'I'm going to start playing again' because it's gone forever."
Meanwhile, Souness will now step up his search for a replacement after failing in a bid to land top target Amoruso.
