AN EAST Lancashire college has submitted a multi-million pound bid for funds to transform its facilities.

The governing body of Accrington and Rossendale College today announced plans to reshape the college to meet the needs of current and future students.

A bid has been submitted to the Learning and Skills Council for new building work and renovation of the existing buildings at Accrington's Sandy Lane site, most of which were built in the 1950s and 1960s.

The project represents a major investment of around £9million and will mean the demolition of some buildings.

A college spokesman said: "The project is to create a new campus at Sandy Lane which will provide local people with some of the best specialist learning facilities in Lancashire.

"It aims to make savings from more efficient use of space and greater efficiency in the use of energy through modern premises.

"The college is celebrating 50 years as an education and training provider. This significant investment will ensure that local people continue to receive the best possible education and training to meet the challenges of the new millennium." An outline planning application has been made to Hyndburn Borough Council but the plans are dependent on funding from the Learning and Skills Council.

A decision will be made this summer, and it is hoped the new campus would be open in late 2006. New buildings would include a performing arts and media centre, hairdressing and beauty salons, library facilities and specialist classrooms.

Improved student facilities would also be provided, along with better access for staff and student wheelchair users to ensure the new campus is 100 per cent wheelchair accessible.
