WITH reference to the comments in 'Leaver at Large,' regarding the spending of the revenue from speed cameras (LET, April 30), as a 'Thatcher' taxpayer I can only say that at all costs it is imperative that our police force is funded and therefore controlled by the community.
In no way should the police be allowed or be encouraged to become self-funded. This could lead to an increasingly independent body.
The police are already sufficiently autonomous without allowing them to become a private army relying on nothing except extortion.
If trouble is experienced with the disposal of the accrued funds, then I'm sure the Chancellor of the Exchequer will think of something.
H TALBOT (Mr), Bennington Street, Blackburn.
