BLACKBURN Rovers coach Dean Saunders is being lined up as the next manager of Derby County.
The former Rams striker is believed to be top of the Pride Park club's short-list after John Gregory was unceremoniously sacked for gross misconduct last night.
Ex-Welsh international star Saunders, whose career also took in spells at Swansea, Oxford, Liverpool, Galatasaray, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Bradford City, is currently the strikers' coach at Rovers and assists with the running of the reserve team having been invited on board by manager Graeme Souness 18 months ago.
Souness today said he would fight to keep the popular Welshman but he also admitted he could understand why the Derby post might appeal to the 38-year-old.
"It wouldn't surprise me if Derby were sniffing around Dean," said the Rovers boss.
"If that was the case then I'd be reluctant to see him go.
"One day, he's going to become a very good manager but whether that's now or in the future I can't really say.
"I'll be speaking to him today to see how he feels but I want him to stay with us."
Gregory was relieved of his duties last night following an inquiry launched in the wake of "serious allegations" made against him earlier in the season.
The full verdict was set to be announced today and a statement from County said: "Derby County is conscious of fans' frustrations and aware of possible media speculation surrounding the future of John Gregory.
"We anticipate being in a position to make a short statement later today.
"We hope that supporters appreciate whatever is contained in the statement and whatever they may read in the papers, the club remain bound by legal constraints."
