IT never ceases to amaze me how the Liberal Democrat Party tries to be all things to all people -- promising some people they will cut taxes, but promising others they will increase taxes.
This is the party that warned voters higher taxes would cause a recession. But then supported the Government's National Insurance increases.
Their leader, Charles Kennedy, says we might go in to the next General Election favouring lower taxes (The Guardian, January 21, 2002).
However, their treasury spokesperson, Matthew Taylor MP, said in a Liberal Democrat press release: "The truth is you cannot put up taxes without cutting services."
They are just the same at local level on Blackburn with Darwen Council, they say one thing then vote with the ruling Labour group to increase taxation.
Thankfully, as proved in the local elections last week, the people of East Lancashire have seen through them. The Liberal Democrats are a mass of contradictions, they are nowhere near an effective opposition to Labour.
