SAM Spence (Letters, April 15) asks for justification on the location of the speed safety cameras in Preston New Road, Blackburn.
He feels one of the speed safety cameras ought to have been sited elsewhere, nearer to schools and a hospital, and complains that the other, newer camera, is not yet working.
I can tell him that this section of highway has been the subject of considerable evaluation over recent years. The location of speed cameras is based on the collation and evaluation of road traffic accident casualty statistics over a three-year period. In the three years prior to the installation of these particular speed safety cameras, there were 21 casualties -- three of which were in the "killed or seriously injured category" -- within 500 metres of the two locations.
Further speed safety camera sites have been proposed for this year, two of which are in the locality of the hospital and schools referred to by Mr Spence.
Delays in commissioning the site near the Mellor Brook turn-off have resulted in the postponement of white lining. However, the site should be operational in the next few weeks.
