GERMAN INVASION: All the excitement of England v West Germany soccer was being revived at schoolboy level by a party of 35 players and three staff from Bury's Derby School. The boys, members of the school's under 14s and under 16s squads, were to spend a week in Rhineland playing three matches, including one against Derby's twin high school in Butzbach.
PILSWORTH-LESS: Greater Manchester's Highways Authority was recommending the abandonment of £42 million worth of road improvements in the county including a £1m project to improve Pilsworth Road in Bury.
