AFTER reading several letters from the 'Friends of Heysham' in Citizen about car boot sales in the village, we two residents feel we must reply.
Our first question is why do the 'Friends' always wish to remain anonymous when writing letters and our second is, who is really the Scrooge in this situation?
The Friends say they will donate £1,000 to Derian House from their proceeds, but our understanding is that this money will come from a series of 12 events over three months.
We believe the revenue (including that from burger and ice cream vans) should be in the region of £1,000 per event. As a charitable body there would be a few expenses to deduct, but we would be interested to know what other charities will benefit.
Lancaster City Council seems to realise just how much disruption the Friends want to cause in a residential area every Sunday in the summer, bearing in mind that people begin arriving from 5am and the last do not leave until 5pm.
If the Friends want a car boot every week, I am sure that an area other than the one on the centre of Heysham could be found if all the relevant information about insurance, charitable status and audited accounts was passed to the city council.
