THE Woman Who Would be Clever, an adaptation by Keith Banks of Les Femmes Savantes by Moliere, will be presented by the Blackburn Cathedral Drama Group this week.
The original play was written in 1672 as a satire against the pedantic women of the age who cultivated learning for its own sake and set themselves up as arbiters of good taste.
It also focuses on the relationship of husbands and wives and parents and children.
These themes, perhaps, have relevance today, particularly with the ideas of women's lib and political correctness.
The performances will be tonight, tomorrow and Thursday, presented as a theatre/supper on the first two nights.
Supper, on the Tuesday and Wednesday only, will be served at 6pm, with the performances starting at 7.30pm.
A strong cast includes Jackie Fielding, Joan Hunwick, Jade Bentley, Emma Cave, Clare Wolfendale, Nigel Battersby, Robin Wolfendale, Michael Ruckledge, Andrew Orr, Phil Wilson and Chris Parker.
Tickets can be obtained from members of the cast, the Dean's verger, Howard Waddell, or by telephoning (01254) 233492 at an inclusive cost of £8.50 for Tuesday and Wednesday and £5, including coffee, on Thursday.
