RAMSBOTTOM Working Men's Club has closed after 120 years.
A spokesman said the closure was due to a number of factors, including declining membership and loss of turnover.
After facing the same threat in 1999, the club was kept going by members' donations, and since then has been run by volunteers.
The club has a loyal but ageing membership, which in common with other clubs of its kind, has not been replaced by the younger generation.
Club members were proud of the fact that, unlike many working men's clubs, Ramsbottom welcomed women, who had full rights as members and played an active part in running the organisation.
Despite the best efforts of its members, the club is now making losses, even with no expenditure on staff.
Treasurer Mr F. Hardman said: "The committee and trustees have done everything possible to keep the club open, but cultural changes and the resulting decline in turnover have meant we have no other option."
