LEE Richardson's comments (Letters, May 5) were, on the whole, spot on. Darreners are moaning all the time, but I wonder if Mr Richardson has ever sat down and thought why we are like this.
Although Blackburn has controlled Darwen since 1974 it has been neglected over this period, not due to councillors vandalising the town, but to the lack of interest in Darwen by these same councillors.
Blackburn has had a regeneration plan for the last 12 years whereas Darwen has just stared workshops to look at ways of to regenerate the town centre.
£500,000 has been allocated to regenerate Fleming Square in Blackburn, plus £300,000 to improve the surrounding area. Darwen's equivalent -- £10,000 to put a lick of pain on Darwen Town Hall and fit automatic watering for plant pots.
£2.5million has been spent on Church Street, Blackburn, plus £2million now being spent on the Pavilions. When Darwen wanted money spent on the old technical school there was none available. Blackburn is getting a grant from the Lottery Fund to bring back Corporation Park to its former glory. Nothing there for Darwen's parks and woods.
It's not Blackburn that wants rid of Darwen. It's Darwen that wants rid of Blackburn. After all, 29 years with a monkey on your back is long enough.
ROY DAVIES, Olive Lane,
Darwen.
