THREATS of a taxi strike over controversial bus-only restrictions have been slammed as reckless and dangerous.
As reported by the Citizen last week, Lancaster City Hackney Proprietors Association secretary Mal Spence says a strike will be considered at the drivers' June 3 meeting.
He says it is a 'last resort' to resolve a row over a ban on taxis using bus lanes in places like Spring Garden Street - and to get cabs recognised as part of the public transport service.
But John Aldred, an association member and former chairman of three years, has condemned all talk of strike and urges drivers to reject such action.
"The worst case scenario is for someone who can't get a taxi to walk home and then get attacked. It is dangerous," he says.
And John, a taxi driver for 12 years, adds: "I call on all taxi drivers to ignore this. Don't even think about it."
He admits there is cause to be angry about restrictions but says the way to deal with the problem is through the law.
"I agree wholeheartedly that we should be allowed to use bus lanes but this is not the way. We are there to get the public home safely, off the streets. It a strike leaves it wide open for every pervert to patrol the night," he says.
"It is stupid, reckless and dangerous. If there was a strike I would be out there working."
