Rail station plan gets major boost
TRANSPORT chiefs have welcomed the petition, submitted to Parliament by Leigh MP Andy Burnham and Makerfield MP Ian McCartney, supporting a new rail station at Golborne.
The 1,800 signature petition sets out the need for a new station to meet the increased demand caused by new housing in the area and says the station would act as a catalyst for regeneration.
Councillor Roger Jones, chairman of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: "We recognise and support the need for a new rail station at Golborne. In June, the Authority will be receiving a report on rail investment proposals across Greater Manchester and I fully expect this to support the case for Golborne.
"To help move this forward, the Authority has also allocated funding to support a public transport study for the Golborne area which will be essential if we are to make the case for a new station to the Strategic Rail Authority for the necessary funding and train services."
Mr Burnham said: "The Authority's positive response to our petition will be welcomed by everyone who signed it. By securing funding for a public transport study for Golborne our campaign has taken an important step forward. We will now be working closely with the Authority to maintain momentum."
Colleague Ian McCartney added: "This is a real boost for Golborne. GMPTE are listening to local people. Let's hope this signals that the train has left the station and will soon be stopping at a new one at Golborne."
