MOTORISTS who break the law by using "red diesel" in road-going vehicles are being targeted by customs and excise officers.
Nine vehicles were seized during a swoop at a north west agricultural market this week and more operations are planned.
Red diesel is cheaper than the regular fuel but is intended for strictly limited use and should not be used on roads.
The customs department has recently bought 70 trailers containing on-the-spot testing equipment. Any vehicle found to be containing red diesel will be instantly seized.
Head of Detection Northwest Jeremy Lee said: "Motorists need to be aware of the full costs of buying cheap diesel. It puts honest filling stations out of business, puts the motorist's vehicle at risk of serious engine damange and robs the taxpayer of money for public services."
A confidential hotline has also been set up where people can report suspicious activity. Ring 0800 59 5000.
