RESIDENTS in Brierfield and the Clover Hill and Walverden wards of Nelson have been reassured by mounted police on the beat this week.
Their presence in crime hot-spots was aimed at preventing crime and anti-social behaviour.
They also chatted to people living in the area to let them know that action was being taken to prevent such incidents.
Geographic Inspector for Nelson and Brierfield Paul Robinson, said: "The mounted police service is available to various divisions and it has become Pennine Division's turn to use their time. We have found them very successful in the past in assisting on reports of anti-social behaviour, reassuring the public and disuading anti-social behaviour.
"They arrived on Tuesday and have been patrolling where we have had difficulties in the past. Brierfield, Clover Hill and Walverden have all had instances of crime in the form of vehicle crime and other problems.
"The mounted officers have already got themselves involved within the community, arresting a disqualified driver and shoplifter."
Brierfield councillor Frank Clifford, welcomed the extra police presence and said it stemmed from a good working relationship between local councillors and the police.
He said: "The mounted police are very welcome. I do sit on the cohesion board that exists to monitor activities in the community with the police and I am mindful of the pro-active work the police are doing.
"They are doing it to ensure people of all ages that they can go about their local business and enjoy life without hindrance.
"I would hope that people will approach the police and welcome them to the community and if there's anything they want to draw their attention to let them know."
