The 87-year-old woman opened a secured door at Crow Wood Court after a stranger appeared at her window.
The woman, who has not been named, told police a man knocked on her window and asked for someone called Marjorie. She went to the front door of the sheltered accommodation block, leaving her flat door unlocked.
The man walked past the lady, into her flat and stole £500 in cash. He is a white male, 5ft 11ins to 6ft tall.
Detective Sergeant Peter Simm of Burnley CID, said: "This is a crime against a vulnerable elderly lady. We would warn people not to let people into their homes without identification."
