ARCHERY is proving to be a hit with people of all ages in Preston according to ace coach Brian Winchester.

The 62-year-old has been a member of the bow and arrow brigade at the Bowmen of Pendle and Samlesbury club since he took up the sport 14 years ago.

The former mechanic bought his archery equipment while working in the Falklands for 18 months with Leyland DAF before returning to Preston in 1986.

The father-of-two has since gained coaching qualifications in archery and coaches at the club based at Samlesbury Hall.

It has been up and running for more than a century and currently has more than 80 members with people of all abilities and ages, from 11 to 60-plus, attending.

Brian says it's an excellent way to keep fit: "I think it's on par with swimming in the way it works the upper body muscles. It's also great for working on hand-eye co-ordination."

Members can also enter competitions in other counties where they compete in shoots from distances of up to 100 yards.

Two years ago a member of the club came second in the World Field Championships -- an event second only to the Olympics.

And, according to Brian, even people with poor eyesight can take part.

He said: "As long as people who are partially sighted have someone who directs them, there is no reason why they can't shoot. I always tell beginners that the more they relax the better they will be at archery. It's very laid back."

Sporty Brian is now aiming to gain a National Qualification level 2 certificate which will make him a county level coach. The club runs a six-week beginners' course on Wednesday evenings from 7pm, costing £35. Those interested in taking part or would like to sponsor the club can ring Brian on 01772 743324 for information.
