FOR once the final score didn't matter when two local football teams took to the pitch.
Because the real star at the end of The Rangers versus The Wanderers charity match last Friday was seven-year-old Dana Carroll who is battling against a rare form of bone cancer.
The event was organised by teenager Matt Barnes (16) who plays for Walshaw Sports Club and manages a club team.
His father, Harry, told the Bury Times: "We are friends of Dana's parents and Matt came up with the idea, and I said I would help him organise it.
"Following the match at Tottington United FC's ground a disco night was organised at Walshaw Sports Club.
"Dana managed to attend with her parents. She is a very brave girl."
Dana, who lives in Pilling Street, Walshaw, with her mum Sharon (32), dad Dave (56), brother Daniel (12), and baby brother Guy, was diagnosed with cancer last October.
She has since won the hearts of the people of Bury. Together they have raised thousands of pounds to send the family on a much deserved holiday to EuroDisney and are now helping to fund further medical treatment after surgeons were forced to amputate Dana's arm in a bid to stem the cancer.
Thanks to B&Q and furniture giants MFI as well as Cormar Carpets in Greenmount, the little girl now has a dream bedroom.
Although money is still be counted from last week's football match, it is thought to be in excess of £1,300. A presentation evening will be held in the coming weeks.
