A COUNCIL has promised to put out more than 100 extra bins on its streets in a new move to purge the whole borough of litter.
Hyndburn Borough Council made the pledge after Coun Brian Roberts noticed that Blackburn Road, Accrington, only had four bins along its entire length.
"It's simple really, we can't expect people to put their litter in bins if there aren't any in the first place," he said.
The bins, costing £50 each to buy and erect, will be positioned on lamp posts, at bus stops or other strategic points all over the borough in places that have a particular litter problem or are short of bins.
The scheme that could run in excess of £5,000 will be funded with money set aside in the budget each year for cleansing.
Coun Roberts said the number of litter bins on the streets of Hyndburn had decreased over the last 12 months because those damaged had not been replaced.
But the council would now be doing something to redress the issue.
He said the council had an idea which areas need addressing, for instance Stanhill, Oswaldtwistle.
But officers would first travel the borough to discover the exact amount needed.
Coun Roberts said the issue came to light when he was driving along Blackburn Road between Accrington and Blackburn.
"There were only about four litter bins that I could see.
"From what I gather, the ones that have been damaged have not been replaced in the last 12 months and it is not something they have targeted.
"We know there is a problem in Stanhill, but there is a problem with rubbish all over the borough.
"We are going to have a purge on litter and this will start it off.
"I imagine around eight will be needed for Blackburn Road and these will be placed on bus stops and lamp posts where they are accessible and where people drop tickets or wrappings such as outside shops. The scheme will be borough wide. A scruffy borough is not a successful borough and how can we expect to attract visitors if it's dirty?"
Leader of Hyndburn Borough Council Peter Britcliffe said: "If members of the public have ideas where bins can be put, contact the council on 01254 388111."
