DAVID Ormerod went from wicket taker to run maker on Saturday as he hit the winning runs off the last ball of the game to send Bacup into the Worsley Cup semi-finals.

Visitors Accrington were the unlucky losers as they forced the Lancashire League champions into a situation where they needed four off the final delivery to win.

Ormerod, who had earlier taken 3-29 as Accrington reached 193-8, kept his cool in the heat to strike the winning boundary and give his side a three-wicket victory.

Earlier, Andre Seymore hit 10 boundaries in his 74 for Accy, while Neal Wilkinson took 2-34 to add to Ormerod's haul.

Things seemed to be going smoothly for Bacup as Dominic Ayres made 59 and Shaun Young 45 but it was left to the tail enders to see out the dramatic win.

Tim Farragher added 28 and Paul Gallagher 16 while Jimmy Hayhurst took 3-27 and Seymore 2-28 for Accrington.

In the semi-finals Bacup will go to 17-times winners East Lancs after they saw off Church by six wickets on Saturday.

In the end it turned out to be an easy win for East Lancs, but during the match each teams' fortunes ebbed and flowed.

At one stage Church were 190-2, with the professional Greg Mail still at the crease and 16 overs still to bat.

But there was a dramatic batting collapse once Paul Kelly had seen off the Aussie pro, as John Fairless' leg spin took three wickets in four balls in his third over, and eight Church wickets went down for just 30 runs, having only faced 45.4 overs of their allotted 50.

Mail hit eight fours from 108 balls in his innings of 76, while Mark Aspin needed only 44 balls for his 52, which included two fours and five sixes. Nick Westwell then snapped up two wickets as East Lancs slipped to 34-3, but Graeme Rose hit 19 in a fourth wicket stand of 36 with professional Johann Louw to bring the home side back into the game.

East Lancs were still struggling at 70-4 after 20 overs, but then followed an unbeaten stand of 152 between Louw and skipper Phil Mercer as they finally won comfortably in the 45th over.

Louw hit six fours and six sixes from 114 balls, and Mercer eight fours from 82 balls.

Colne, league leaders going into the game, beat Haslingden at the Horsfield as professional Ben Higgins hit 118.

Haslingden had a sub pro in Hasan Adnan and he made an impact with 88 as they reached 216. Steve Dearden made 29, Stuart Catterall 26 and Andrew Smith 21 not out for the visitors.

But Higgins then put on 121 for the first wicket with Jeff Ellis (31) as Colne chased the target, eventually reaching it for the loss of four wickets.

Skipper Gary Laycock took 3-17 and then hit an unbeaten 17 but it was Andy Roberts who finished the game with a six for Colne.

In the last four, Colne now face Rawtenstall, who beat Burnley by five wickets at Bacup Road with professional Mike Smith hitting 72 not out, including the winning hit for six out of the ground.

Andrew Payne hit 65 and Chris Cook-Martin 41 for the home side after Burnley had made 223-7 with their tail ender Dave Connolly smashed an unbeaten 42 off just 16 balls with five fours and three sixes.
