BLACKBURN winger Keith Gillespie is one of 586 Premiership and Football League players who face the prospect of looking for a new club this summer.
The Professional Footballers Association has released a list of players whose contracts are set to run out at the end of the month.
And Northern Ireland winger Gillespie, Croatian striker Alen Boksic and Czech midfielder Patrik Berger are just some of the high-profile players on the list who will be available to sign on a free transfer when their current deals expire.
While the bigger names are sure to be fixed up quickly, the PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor is concerned that a significant proportion of those available will fail to find a new club.
"We could lose as many as a third of the 586. Our job is to try and get them all fixed up - but I'd be pleased if two thirds stayed," said Taylor.
"People are quick to talk about players' salaries but not as eager to look at the other side of it - the insecurity of the profession.
"The majority of players are on one or two-year contracts, particularly in the Football League, so are very insecure and vulnerable.
"And there is a great deal of uncertainty in a lot of households."
Six Blackburn players feature on the list after they were informed by Rovers that they would not be having their contracts renewed.
Henning Berg was the other high-profile name alongside Gillespie while reserve team regulars Darren Dunning, Jimmy Corbett, Marc Richards and Darren Hockenhull have also been released.
