FOOTBALL teams Harle Syke Hammers, Brunlea and Jinnah FC have scooped top honours in the annual Burnley Police 7-a-side Community Cup competition.
A record 350 football fanatics took part in this year's Warburtons sponsored tournament on the Astroturf at Towneley.
Harle Syke Hammers beat off fierce competition to take first place in the Under 14s section, while Brunlea triumphed in the Under 17s and Jinnah fought off teams from Burnley Police and the local media to scoop the Over 17s trophy. Trophies and medals were presented by the Mayor of Burnley Coun Lillian Clark, and Warburtons General Manager, Duncan Lees.
Runners-up Ivy Teds, Stoops & Hargher Clough and Princes Trust also received trophies and medals, while fair play awards provided by BBC Radio Lancashire are to go to ELAC, Barclay Blades and Scott Park.
Charity was a winner on the day too -- with all proceeds being donated to the Mayor of Burnley's 2003 Charity Appeal
Tournament organiser, Burnley Wood Community Beat Officer PC Andy Thornhill, said: "This year's competition attracted double the number of teams than last year and was a huge success.
"Young people and adults from all ages ranges and backgrounds took part and I think it's fair to say that everyone, regardless of whether then won or lost, had a terrific day.
"I would like to thank everyone who took part and all those who supported the tournament this year, especially our sponsors Warburtons who provided the trophies, medals, certificates and goody bags for competitors."
Commenting on the tournament which Warburtons have sponsored for a second year running, general manager of the company's Burnley bakery, Duncan Lees, said: "Football is a great way to bring people together and we see this as a fun initiative that supports youngsters across our local community. After the success of last year's tournament we were happy to sponsor the event again this year."
