A FORMER mill site at the Barnfield Business Centre in Nelson could be given a new lease of life if plans for housing development are given the thumbs-up by councillors.

An application for outline permission to build eight town houses and an estate road on the cleared site at unit one of the centre, in Brunswick Street, has been submitted to Pendle Council.

But planning officers have recommended that the proposal should be refused on the grounds it does not comply with local policy in which the site is designated an Essential Employment Area. They say it should be safeguarded to maintain job opportunities in Pendle.

One letter has been received by a neighbour which said the plan would improve the appearance of the site.

The site, with access from Lily Street, off Brunswick Street, is derelict and overgrown.
