ONE example of how diversification can set pubs apart from the opposition is David Grimshaw's oriental recipe for success at his Burnley hostelry.
David, who took over the Bull and Butcher pub in Habergham Eaves, Burnley, last November, wanted to add an exotic flavour to the business and decided to launch an authentic Thai restaurant on the premises.
David was a relative newcomer to the pub trade, and spent many years working as a chef in a hotel.
He said he felt a change of direction was needed when he took over at the pub, which had stiff competition. He chatted to his friends and family, who had Thai connections, and one of them, Hung Bunthip, wanted to open a restaurant.
He said: "This provided a perfect opportunity to achieve our dreams and offer something a little bit different."
The Bull and Butcher, owned by the Punch Pub Company (PCC), now has The Bunthip Thai on its premises with 100 traditional dishes available.
