BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent could face competition from Coventry City for the signature of Danny Coyne if he decides to press ahead with a move for the 'wantaway' Grimsby keeper.

Sources in the Midlands claim Sky Blues chief Gary McAllister could be ready to turn to the former Tranmere stopper in his quest for an experienced keeper.

Coyne, who has been linked with a summer move to Turf Moor, has already admitted he would jump at the chance of joining the Clarets.

But McAllister may try to hijack any potential move after reports have claimed he is keeping close tabs on the Welsh international's situation at Blundell Park.

Coventry recently off-loaded three keepers as part of a summer clear out at Highfield Road.

Danish stopper Morten Hyldgaard, Frenchman Fabien Debec and Rotherham-bound Gary Montgomery have all been bombed out by the hard-up First Division club which means that McAllister is in the market for some experienced cover between the sticks.

He recently signed rookie keeper Scot Shearer from Albion Rovers but the Scot is believed to want a more experienced man as his number one.

However, Coyne has already publicly stated a move to Burnley would appeal to him if Ternent decided to swoop.

"I want to play as high as I possibly can and Burnley are a massive club," said Coyne, who is close friends with a number of the Clarets' first team squad.

"I know quite a few of the lads there. The speculation has been well publicised, but we will have to wait and see what happens.

"Obviously Burnley are a big club and the ambition is there. And from what I hear about the manager, and what I've seen, he has a great reputation, and is ambitious himself, which would match my ambition."
