ON SATURDAY morning I walked into town as usual past the endless trail of vomit, bottles, cans, pizza boxes, food carton, carrier bags and lots more left by the Friday nights litter bugs and drunks along Scotforth Road and Belle Vue Terrace.

As a long campaigner for a clean environment, it is beyond all reason that a certain few with no respect for decent people should be allowed to ignore the many refuse bins provided by the city council in their efforts to destroy our historic city.

As I have asked on many occasions in the past, what must visitors think when they enter Scotforth from the south? Do they think we are all a load of scruffs with no respect for the next person?

I remember Cabinet minister Paul Boateng's words when visiting Lancaster recently. When walking around the city, he stopped on the Millennium Bridge and remarked: "What a lovely city you have."

We should be very proud of the achievements of the city and of its redevelopment, especially along the quay. However, nothing can be attained by a 'one man band' approach by the council - the community must also work with it to regenerate the area.

Maybe people get the impression that I go on a bit, but what is the point of being returned to the city council to represent the public if you 'do nowt'. It will not make a difference and it will certainly not earn the respect of the people who put you there, and it is not how I operate, now or ever.

Cllr Sheila Denwood, Scotforth West.
