THE Harris Orphanage 2003 reunion took place last Saturday, May 31, at the Harris Park Conference Centre, Preston, which was the previous school room and chapel.

Mrs Brooks, who was matron from 1952-72, was able to attend to the delight of all those who benefited from her care and guidance, and is still held in very high regard after all these years. Sadly, Mr Brooks, who was governor over the same period, died some years ago but was much talked about with the same respect and affection as matron herself.

More than 80 people attended, ex-residents being in the majority, but also a small number of Harris pupils came along too. Guests came from all parts of the country and some travelled from even further afield, in particular Bill Graham, from Australia, and Keith Challioner, from the Canary Islands.

Apart from catching up on nearly 50 years, there was also memorabilia on display, and a video of the rededication service of the War Memorial, held in 2001, played throughout the day showing footage of the orphanage before the current restoration programme.

The day ended with a stroll round the grounds to view the houses being restored to their former glory to the delight of all those who lived in them.
