DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Preston schoolboy Imraan Vohra have revealed they are following a new lead.

Police in Preston recently appealed for past victims of sexual abuse to come forward if they had not contacted the police before.

Officers investigating the murder, which happened 17 years ago, were hoping that similarities would be found in past cases that could be linked to the youngster's death.

Now a man has come forward to help.

Detective Inspector Joe Kellett, heading the investigation from Preston police station, said: "This was following the recent appeal for victims of historic abuse, who may not have previously reported it to the police to come forward.

"It may be that the person who sexually abused the individual concerned may also be the person responsible for the abuse and murder of Imraan Vohra.

"As a result of that appeal we have had a handful come forward. One in particular had some similarities. This new lead is being followed up by detectives working on the case."

Imraan's body was found in Avenham Park, Preston, on Saturday July 13, 1985 following a massive search. The boy, who was nine-years-old, had been reported missing from home two days earlier. Nobody was ever convicted of the crime.

After reopening the case, detectives began to take DNA swabs from 800 men, and so far a quarter of these have now been taken.

But DI Kellett says the investigation is still as active as ever, with any information being treated confidentially.

He said: "Any males who may have been victims of sexual abuse should come forward and contact us."

Anybody who can help should call the police on 01772 203203.
