WHITEFIELD Golf Club is on course for a new million-pound clubhouse in plush residential surroundings.
Outline plans have been submitted to Bury Council to demolish the existing 71-year-old clubhouse in Higher Lane and replace it with 23 two-bedroom apartments.
A modern, state-of-the-art clubhouse with new locker rooms, restaurant, snooker room and lounge will be built on the current tennis courts.
Golf club president Dr Gerald Caplan said: "There will be space for new members, extra amenities for the community and facilities for functions and company away-days."
The radical changes, subject to planning permission, will be made possible from the sale of the land currently occupied by the old clubhouse. It will also mean the golf course itself, which has suffered a history of drainage problems, can be developed.
Dr Caplan said the amount available to spend would depend on planning permission being granted but that the new project would cost in the region of £1.7 million."
The planned development will be sited opposite the recently completed Wentworth Court.
