A DECISION will be taken next Tuesday on whether the Liberal Democrats in Pendle will play any part on the executive committee.

The Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal, has received a requisition, signed by 14 members of the council, to call an extraordinary meeting of the council.

The item to be discussed is the Liberal Democrats' wish to appoint three of their group to the executive.

Coun Iqbal has decided that the meeting will be held at 7pm, in the council chamber at Nelson Town Hall, on Tuesday.

The request was made by the Liberal Democrats following the on-going row over the allocation of seats on the decision-making committee.

At the annual council meeting the group refused to nominate anyone to the executive when their choice of a political make-up of five Liberal Democrats, three Labour and two Conservatives was ruled out.

Instead members voted in a set-up of four Liberal Democrats, three Labour and three Conservatives.

After threatening to resign as leader of the council over the matter, Coun Alan Davies eventually decided to continue in the role and chaired the first meeting of the executive on May 29.

He invited three members of his group -- Coun David Whipp, Coun John David and Coun David Clegg -- to join in the meeting but they were not allowed to vote on items on the agenda. Coun Davies said: "We have called the meeting to ensure we get people in place before the next executive. The council is the only one who can actually appoint to the executive.

"At the last executive we just had me there alone which wasn't satisfactory."

The group will be hoping to get members on the executive as soon as possible after calling in decisions made by the executive on two items, including the setting up of a working group to deal with updates on the Housing Market Renewal Initiative.
