A NEW campaign to deter thieves from parts of Rossendale has been launched in the valley following an increase in burglaries.
Officers from Rossendale West, which covers the Rawtenstall and Haslingden areas are taking steps to prevent opportunist thieves making off with property.
The campaign will focus, not on home burglaries, but burglaries in other premises, like sheds, garages, retail premises and pubs.
A number of these premises have been targeted by thieves over the past month and police are keen to reduce the likelihood of more of them falling prey to thieves.
Inspector Roger Ravenscroft said: "It isn't uncommon for sheds to be targeted at this time of year but the increase in offences, plus the fact that pubs, retail outlets and one or two farms have also been targeted by thieves is a cause for concern.
"The numbers aren't huge -- 11 premises in the past month -- but as far as we're concerned, even one burglary is one too many."
A host of interventions are now being planned by police including increased overt and covert patrols in hot spot areas as well as:
Posters for retailers to use warning thieves that valuables are not left on premises overnight;
Crime prevention displays and mailshots;
Letters to suspected offenders warning them of increased police activity and a greater risk of being caught;
Personal crime prevention visits and targeting of vulnerable premises.
In addition, police are appealing for the public to play their part by coming forward with information about suspected offenders.
Insp Ravenscroft said: "I would urge people to report suspicious activity and to have the courage to come forward if they have any information about these offences."
"I would also urge people to take another look at their property with a critical eye on security. Ensure all doors and windows are secured and buildings like sheds, garages and outhouses have good quality locks and even alarms fitted.
"If we work together I am confident that we can beat the burglar and help put a stop to the current increase in offences."
A wide range of crime prevention advice is available at Haslingden and Rawtenstall police stations.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01282 425001, or Crimestoppers free and in confidence on 0800 555 111.
