TWO rowers poised to take on the world's toughest race are staging a black-tie ball to help raise funds for the challenge.
Lancaster's Adam Murfitt and Paul Nelson, from Chorley, are embarking on the gruelling Atlantic Rowing Challenge in October.
They will row 2,900 nautical miles in shifts of two hours on and two hours off as they compete against 29 other double-handed teams from the Canary Islands to Barbados.
The crossing is estimated to take 55 days - with the current record standing at 41 - and Adam, 31, and Paul, 28, are determined to beat it and win.
The pair, who hope their effort will help raise the area's profile, are still searching for corporate sponsors.
But with £30,000 in the coffers thanks to fund-raising and support from local companies, they need another £20,000 to cover the entry fees, transport and supplies.
They are holding a black-tie dinner and disco on June 13 in Preston's Harris Park Centre, featuring a celebrity guest, auction and live entertainment. Also making an appearance will be their 'Spirit of Lancashire' boat.
Adam, who has his own business, cycles to and from work and then goes to the gym day to prepare for the challenge.
