CLLR Denwood's concern about litter bugs (Citizen letters last week) must be shared by many. Litter, however, does not usually block the use of pavements.
In contrast, cars parked for long periods, either partly or wholly on the pavement, are a major obstacle to free use by pedestrians. Mothers with push chairs and toddlers are most affected and quite often are forced into the road.
The Highway Code makes it quite clear that such parking is unlawful. Unlike litter, the offender is readily identified and warned - but the city council and police give low priority to dealing with such obstruction.
If people see the footpath abused by car parking why should they worry about litter or any other anti-social behaviour?
Cllr Denwood might like to raise this issue with the Mayor and councillors.
