YOUNG people from low-income families in East Lancashire will be able to take part in volunteer work across areas as diverse as conservation and media projects as part of a new scheme.
The University of Central Lancashire Volunteering Unit has been chosen to take up a government challenge to encourage more young people to do volunteer work in their communities.
The challenge aims to remove financial barriers that prevent some youngsters from lending a hand, and those who take part will get a weekly allowance and a completion award of £750 after nine months.
Participants across Lancashire will undertake a variety of placements which are also aimed at improving skills for further learning or employment.
Minister for Young People Ivan Lewis congratulated the university on the award.
